Ancient History
Vakathanam has a remarkable historical background dating back to ancient times. The region was once under the rule of the Thekkumkoor kings. Manikandhapuram is one of the important historical centres associated with the history of Vakathanam. Historical sources indicate that Manikandhapuram had close connections with the history of the Kingdom of Thekkumkoor.
The fourteenth-century Malayalam literary work Unnuneeli Sandesam makes references to Manikandhapuram and the Sree Krishna Temple located there. These references provide evidence of the rich and ancient cultural heritage of the Vakathanam region.
Name and Local History
Njalikuzhi also occupies a significant place in the local history of Vakathanam. According to the Vakathanam Village records of the Revenue Department of the Government of Kerala, Njalikuzhi was historically known as a place where criminals were executed by hanging. Such historical memories provide insights into the administrative and social systems that existed in the region in earlier times.
Agriculture and Economic Development
Agriculture has played a major role in the social and economic development of Vakathanam. The region is characterised by fertile soil, hills, valleys and paddy fields. Extensive paddy fields once existed in the western parts of the Panchayat.
In earlier times, tapioca and jackfruit were among the important agricultural products of Vakathanam. The agricultural landscape underwent significant changes with the expansion of rubber cultivation. Revenue Department records indicate that rubber cultivation had already begun in Vakathanam by the 1930s and became widespread by the 1970s. Today, paddy and rubber are among the major agricultural crops of the region.
Religious and Cultural Heritage
Temples, churches and monasteries have played an important role in the history and cultural development of Vakathanam.
Manikandhapuram Temple is regarded as one of the oldest places of worship in Vakathanam. The history of the temple is closely associated with the period of the Thekkumkoor kings.
Places of worship including the Kadampoor Narasimha Swamy Temple have also contributed to the rich religious and cultural heritage of the region.
Vakathanam also has an important Christian heritage, with several historically significant centres. Vallikkattu Dayara has developed into one of the prominent pilgrimage centres in the region. The burial of His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese I, Catholicos of the East, at Vallikkattu Dayara in 1928 further enhanced the historical and spiritual significance of this centre.
Educational and Social Development
Over the years, Vakathanam has made significant progress in education and social development. Educational institutions in the region have played a vital role in the social advancement of the village.
For instance, Vakathanam Government L.P.G.S. was established in 1920, according to the official educational record available through SchoolWiki.
The expansion of education, improvement in transportation facilities, transformation of the agricultural sector and growth of commercial centres gradually transformed Vakathanam into a modern rural community.
Growth of Local Self-Government
Vakathanam Grama Panchayat functions as part of the local self-government system based on people’s participation and decentralised development. Today, Vakathanam Grama Panchayat is under the jurisdiction of Madappally Block Panchayat.
Through various development initiatives, the Panchayat continues to work in areas such as infrastructure development, drinking water, roads, sanitation, waste management, healthcare, education, social welfare and agricultural development.
Vakathanam Grama Panchayat was also selected in the fourth phase of the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), which was launched in 2014. The programme provided opportunities for comprehensive rural development focusing on infrastructure, social development, economic progress, environmental protection and good governance.
