Panchayat
A Panchayat is a collective body of elected representatives responsible for administering the affairs of Panchayati Raj Institutions. In the case of a Grama Panchayat, it is the principal governing body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration of the Panchayat. The main components of a Panchayat include the President, who is the head of the Panchayat, presides over meetings, and supervises its overall functioning; the Vice President, who performs the President’s duties in their absence; and Ward Members, who are elected representatives from each ward of the Panchayat. Vakathanam Grama Panchayat is a vibrant rural local self-government institution situated in the Changanassery Taluk of Kerala, within the Kottayam district. Located approximately 12 kilometers from Kottayam town on the Kottayam–Changanassery route, the Panchayat serves as an important administrative and socio-economic hub of the region.
The Panchayat comprises two major villages—Vakathanam and Thottakkad—and is administratively divided into multiple wards represented by elected members, ensuring democratic participation and grassroots governance.
